Vaginismus is when a spastic condition of the vaginal and pelvic floor muscles makes it difficult, sometimes impossible, to insert a penis or other instrument, including a finger or gynaecological examination devices, into the vagina. Unfortunately, this does not always mean that the muscle is strong, just overstrained. This is a muscular reaction, like when we are scared or worried, afraid of something, an exam, a test, an unexpected situation that we feel has high stakes. When this happens, our skeletal muscles and our back muscles can tense up, causing a number of symptoms. Since it is the female organ that is under stress, it is important to look carefully at the woman's reservations and fears about intimacy, sexuality, relationships with men, pleasure, shame, the possibility of conception, motherhood, pregnancy and the quality of a relationship. This phenomenon is an involuntary defensive reflex, a consequence of internal processes that are sometimes difficult to understand. The prevalence of vaginismus is around 1%, but it can cause a serious self-esteem problem, preventing the healthy development and enjoyment of womanhood and the fulfilment of a relationship. That is why solving it can bring ecstatic, joyful changes, when the vagina gives way easily to penetration, when the pleasure of sex is felt, or when the baby slips out of the vagina when giving birth. During vaginismus, the increased muscle tension causes a major loss of nutrients and blood supply to the vagina and the surrounding muscles and tissues. The blood supply disturbance due to vaginismus can exhaust the pelvic floor muscles and sphincters, and may cause a loss of strength, which can lead to symptoms of muscle weakness (difficulty in controlling urine, wind and bowel movements, lower abdominal organs sink, etc.). The abnormal functioning can lead to a loss of self-esteem and a feeling of inadequacy in the women concerned.

Because of the nature of the problem, attempts to relieve or eliminate the spasm locally may have little success. Some unsuccessful suggestions in cases of vaginismus include: drinking alcohol or taking a sedative before sexual intercourse, using lidocaine cream (used as an anaesthetic in oral surgery) during foreplay, which unfortunately also desensitises the vaginal area. Occasionally, vaginal dilators or surgical vaginal dilatation are used, which can often make things worse. This symptom is the tip of the iceberg! What happens to the deeper processes in the psyche? If we don't take a look at that, the consequence reappears again and again, instead of healing. Professionals who are aware of what is behind the process are not satisfied with superficial experiments. They refer their patients to a psychologist, sexologist or to a session where they have the chance to recognise the interconnectedness of the body and soul, to get a personal scripts of their symptom formation.
